Going up?

No no dear readers... This is not a post where I reveal my sources to help you get high... This is a post about a simple act of life that we all go through everyday and yet so many still get wrong!! Alas, we are discussing..... taking the elevator...

You get to the elevator and see two buttons, one pointing up and the other pointing down... You're one entity, so you will be going one way, either up or down... Yet, you see two buttons... Naturally you press both... Because if you press only one, the elevator might decide to skip you altogether... So you press two... The elevator stops, the doors open, the people inside blink... It's going in the opposite direction!! You just wait (like an idiot)... The doors close and life goes on (and you just got called a couple of names for being so nice)...

See, there's an issue here that apparently, MANY people don't know about... Clicking BOTH elevator buttons, does not summon the elevator to come faster, nor does it secure it your way! In fact, it probably delays your journey and definitely delays the journey of others; people in the elevator who went to college and got a PhD in "Elevator Usage - The Logic and Physics" will have to wait at the floor where you clicked even though you're going in a different direction...

Leih? La2anak/2anik bheem/bheemeh....
(I'm loving this word and use it a lot when driving)

See there's a simple, reasonable, logical and surprisingly easy to memorize postulate that governs most elevators conceived after 1899: if you're going up, click only the up button; if you're going down, click the down button...

One more time... I'm going up, so I must only click the up button... I'm going down (not on someone), so I must only click the down button!! Repeat until desired effect is reached...

Now I know we all went through this revelation (some of us at age two, some of us at age 22) but really really there are many who still have no idea that this is how calling elevators works!!! One of the branches of my gym has an underground parking and I always have to stop because some idiot called the elevator the wrong way, and they say, yeah no the other direction...

So in my crusade to make the Lebanese better citizens, this is another lesson in how to do a daily act without making other people curse you!!

  1. I have a feeling this is inspired from crown plaza's elevator :)

  2. Akh you really hit a sore spot for me on Lebanese and the elevators. I have seen people press the "down" button when they want to go up. when i ask why, they say so that the elevator goes down to the ground floor to pick them up !!!!
